PC Satellite TV Software

Reuters Summit - Sling Media to let users boost net speed

PC Satellite TV Software: Gadget maker Sling Media, whose device relays home television programs to laptops and cell phones, plans to resell fast Internet service and may start showing ads later this year.

The company's Slingbox connects cable and satellite TV set-top boxes to the Internet. As a result, cell phones and other Web-connect devices can show what's on a customer's living room TV.

But viewing quality depends on Internet connection strength, and so later this year Sling Media will add a virtual button to its PC and cell phone software that will boost home broadband service speed.

Sling Media Chief Executive Blake Krikorian discussed the closely watched technology company's 2007 plans at the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in New York on Tuesday.

Technology overload

Satellite TV for Your PC: I have a love/hate relationship with technology. Sometimes I long for the days of my childhood when the big technological advancement of the day was the eight-track tape player. The great thing about the eight-track tape player was that it was pretty simple to figure out how to use it. There was a big hole in the side of the player and you simply slid the eight-track into the hole and, voila, music started playing.

Solving bad cell reception; choosing a new PC

PC TV - I get a lot of question about which particular brands of certain items I like. The question people should ask, though, is not really what brand they should choose, but which models are best for their situation. Most questions I receive ask about cell phones and laptops.

Keith Mayberry of Cortez, CO asks: I live in a remote area of Colorado and want a cell phone with the basics which for me is good reception in fringe areas, and a good speakerphone. I never use the other features (such as texting, music, news, email, etc.) I want the basics. I am currently with Verizon and the phones available never seem to be rated for good reception. Any ideas?

It's difficult for me to suggest a particular handset for your situation because I'm not familiar with your location.

Akimbo expands VOD service to PCs

While competitors rush to move their Internet-delivered TV and movies from the PC to the TV, Internet video-on-demand service Akimbo is going the opposite direction.

On April 16, the company will launch a PC version for Windows XP and Windows Vista of Akimbo's TV and movie video-on-demand service, which is now offered primarily through Akimbo RCA set-top boxes that connect directly to the TV. Akimbo also is offered through AT&T's HomeZone satellite and Internet service and was offered on a limited basis through Media Center PCs.

"There is a benefit to being in both places," said Jim Funk, VP of marketing. "There's a lot of PCs compared to other types of devices."

The new PC offerings will reach more consumers and offer a broader array of Akimbo's content, which ranges from TV shows from National Geographic and CNN to instructional videos, independent films, foreign programming and extreme sports.
