The most popular animated character of all-time is undoubtedly Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse is the creation of Walt Disney with the help of fellow animator Ub Iwerks. While he was originally nothing more than a cartoon character, he has transformed into one of the most recognized symbols in the world. How did this astounding character come to be?

Walt Disney had already achieved a certain amount of success with his character "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit." However, his distributor swindled the rights to the character and hired away most of Disney's staff. After meeting his contractual obligations with Oswald, Disney experimented with a number of different animals including a horse, cow, and frog. A new character was on the horizon. When Walt was a boy in Missouri, he had a pet mouse. His love for this mouse would finally inspire one of the greatest animated characters of all time. He asked Iwerks to come up with some sketches of a lovable little mouse and the initial drafts called the loveable mouse "Mortimer Mouse." Luckily his wife talked him out of the idea and they came up with the idea of "Mickey."

Mickey Mouse was first seen in a short movie called "Plane Crazy." In this movie, Mickey fancies himself an aviator. He and Minnie take a flight during which Minnie parachutes from. Mickey eventually crashes the plane. The short received mixed reviews and did not fare as well as Disney had hoped.

Mickey eventually broke through with the movie "Steamboat Willie." This was generally credited as Mickey's official debut. The reason behind this is that this feature actually got picked up by a distributor, while the older Mickey shorts did not. While this wasn't the first cartoon to have sound, it was the first one to synchronize the sound with the action. It is interesting to note that Disney personally performed the voices for Mickey and Minnie.

The path to becoming an intercontinental icon was set. Disney capitalized on Mickey's popularity by putting his likeness on everything from lunch boxes to movie cases. Presently, those big black ears are recognized by practically anyone. In recent years, his recognition has continued with children as a result of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse cartoon and similar shows. As each generation introduces him to the next, the appeal of Mickey Mouse knows no bounds.

The world is a dangerous place and one of the most dangerous places is the television room. You see, television made my house collapse.

I was watching one of those renovations shows on television: Someone buys this little bungalow for a song then spends some money and some elbow grease renovating it. Then he or she sells the place for a huge amount of money. It looked so easy: Within an hour, the house is purchased, gutted and back on the market with nary a splinter or banged thumb. How hard can flipping houses?

Well, I'm no dummy. I know there is a lot you don't see on those shows. You don't see how long a project actually takes in terms of work hours. There are whole teams of people coming in on the shows, in some cases round the clock. Plus they are professionals who know every little trick to save time and money.

I also know that these shows don't show you everything that happens during the project. Sure, you see them taking the first swing of the hammer and the strain of moving out the heavy furniture. But they don't show you how they accidentally broke the china cabinet. Or how the "burnt sienna" paint looked closer to "hunter orange" on the wall.

They also don't tell you that the person doing the flipping has been doing this for 20 years or more and knows how to do every task in the project. Or that he has friends who can do the parts he is less familiar with. Or that the show's staff has all the connections needed to make the project sail swimmingly along.

No. They don't tell you all that. They make it all look so easy. And at the end, the family stands at the end, all smiling and happy. They don't tell you about the arguments that took place when the wife found her kitchen all torn apart. Or when she was told it would take "a little extra time" to install the granite kitchen counters.

Well, I'm telling you about all these things now. So you don't have to go through what I did. I was watching one of those shows and I thought, "Well, if they gut a whole house. I sure can expand our kitchen a bit."

I had always thought that by removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room, the whole area would be so much more open. I thought it would be a big surprise for my wife. So one weekend, when she was out with the girls, I got started.

I took a sledge hammer and took out that wall.

Another thing they didn't mention on those shows: Taking out load bearing walls can make the house collapse. I'm telling you now.

And that's how television can make your house collapse.

When you think of a mad scientist, you're bound to call upon images of a be-speckled, manically laughing, slightly hunched over crackpot in a laboratory surrounded by beakers full of bubbling, fizzing solvents and crackling electrical machines. The mad scientist is perpetually obsessed with ranting monologues about being misunderstood by the world. He's not mad, he's misunderstood and now the world has to pay for not supporting his megalomaniacal wish to play God.

Every culture has its distinctive mad scientist: Victor Frankenstein, Doctor Jekyll, Rotwang, Dr. Steel, Griffin, Doctor No, The Invisible Man, Dr. Phibes and, of course, Dr. Moreau. They have all been exiled form normal science and are forced to experiment in secret until that fateful day, when they will unleash their creation on the world. A multitude of bad experiments and bad special effects could have been kept from the world, if only reasonable scientists had listened to their stark, raving mad associates.

For our lack of understanding, we have been inundated with a multitude of Saturday matinees and worn, thumbed-through paperback novels chronicling their exploits. Comic books and posters alike encapsulate famous line like, "They all laughed at me. But I will show them. One day it will be the one who laughs last!" And so the ride to the center of madness continues, with us, the audience, grinning from ear to ear.

There have been a number of great actors who have made their names playing mad scientists. Luminaries like Bela Lugosi, Charles Laughton, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and the indomitable, Vincent Price have all reinforced that powerful archetype. Price, in particular, surprised audiences with his depiction of the disfigured Dr. Phibes, in The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971). So twisted and entertaining a tale was woven by the filmmakers that audiences demanded a sequel, Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972).

In "The Island of Doctor Moreau," written by H.G. Wells in 1896, our mad scientist is the eponymous Dr. Moreau. He uses a number of medications and solvents that turn animals into humans, which have managed to populate his fog shrouded island. Moreau is lord of these man-beasts, and though he has caused immense pain and suffering, he has no intention to stop his experiments. As the story unfolds, the protagonist, Prendick, the epitome of the English upper-class, slowly begins to understand that indeed Moreau is onto something concerning the nature of man. Indeed it seems that something is our never-ending fascination with the misunderstood and the incomprehensible.

A popular spin-offs in recent decades was Duck Tales, which featured Donald leaving his nephews with their rich Uncle Scrooge McDuck. Hearing these words of advice from the stunt coordinator I had two things pass quickly through my mind. My first thought was "Great!" I was sure it was going to be a good evening. My second thought was that I hoped the cars did indeed have strong e-brakes.

Picking up my bag with my driving gear I walked toward the picture cars that were lined up at the rear of the location area. A number of various shaped and sized cars were to appear in the shoot that evening and my eyes were drawn to the Crown Victorias parked there. The cars were set up with all the police lights and I was excited to be playing a 'goodie' that evening.

Trying out each car in turn, I systematically tested the e-brake pedal to find a vehicle that had a strong brake. Deciding that two of them were too soft, I narrowed it down to two that felt OK. I wasn't completely happy with them, but at least I could feel that although the brake didn't go down firmly, it didn't just go to the floor. Picking the car with the most effective e-brake, I got in and started driving out of the stall.

Thinking it would be best to give the e-brake a test run, I asked a friend to help me check the brakes. While my friend stood back to watch the tire on the passenger side, I revved the car and hit the e-brake when I reached 30km per hour. By leaning out the driver's window I was able to check the rear tire and could see it lock, which my friend confirmed the other rear tire did as well. I was set to go! The initial challenge was behind me.

Pulling up in my car, I double checked the air pressure in the tires. Deciding that it was on the low side, I took out a transportable compressor that plugs into the car cigarette lighter hooking the remote end to the tire. As the tires were being pumped up, I set up the e-brake release handle to ensure it stayed out, using a length of hose pipe and some duct tape. This was important to ensure that the e-brake wouldn't lock up when I depressed it during the stunt sequence.

Once the e-brake was ready and the tires sorted, I moved my car seat into position. Seeing a few things lying around on the floor I gathered them up to be sure that there was no likelihood of anything sliding under my feet as I was driving.

I double-checked that the tire pressure was set to an appropriate 38 lbs. in the rear tires and 32 in the front. Proper air pressure was essential for the precision slow speed sequences, especially with the featured 90 and 180 degree turns that where to be shot. The correct tire pressure would be a key factor in making sure the car would come to a stop at the right angle.

Now that the car I was most confident about was ready to go, I repeated the whole process with the second best vehicle I had come across. Having the back-up ready would ensure a speedy switch if the first car had any problems. With all the prep work done, I went in to have some "breakfast" as the sky darkened. Another night on a film set as a stunt driver was just beginning.

Some of the best directors that have ever worked in Hollywood came out of that generation of films. The stories were all well structured with the focus on the emotions of the characters.

What these films can teach today's filmmakers is the importance of stirring the emotions of the audience. The great directors knew how to touch an audience and create a good story that was full of emotion.

To accomplish this, the filmmaker will control the pace of the film and give the piece meaning and direction. The film should show the experiences that the characters in the movie encounter as they move through the scenes. The characters should also be on a path toward a goal or pursuit in which obstacles confront them.

Through the story the character should grow and change from the person that he was in the beginning of the film. This how a movie becomes meaningful. When characters in a movie do not change and grow the film will not become one of the memorable films that we all know and love.

The scenes of the film are used to tell the story. The filmmaker will need to decide which scenes are used in the movie and which ones will be left out. The personal style of the filmmaker is used to determine the importance of each scene.

Some of the things that will determine if a scene should be included in a film are the ability of the scene to move the plot forward. To determine if something is important the filmmaker might ask what would happen if the scene were not included in the film. Would the movie be less meaningful without the inclusion of the scene?
