The Return of Jean Claude Van Damme

As L.L. Cool J famously rapped, 'Don't call it a come-back. I've been here for years'. So too has Jean-Claude Van Damme. Once a world famous action star, now more of a straight to video action star, he's managed to stay working, but not at the level that we once remember. To everyone's surprise, however, he's just made a movie that's actually being taken seriously

For the newest and youngest of action movie fans: World-famous action hero, Jean-Claude Van Damme, has been in almost 40 movies. He was 11 years old when he began training in martial arts, but retired from active competition to acquire a movie career. He left with an impressive 18-1 (18 knockouts) record.

An important note: Before he retired, he had a rematch with Patrick Teugels, the only man to defeat him. Van Damme came out punching and kicking, but his overwhelming aggression was too much for Teugels. The match was halted in under the 2-minute mark.

Van Damme is known for his impressive physique, as well as being muscular and handsome. In almost every Van Damme film, he executes a masterful split. The action heroes he portrays usually have a softer character than those portrayed by Schwarzenegger or Stallone. Van Damme's worldwide appeal is unchallenged, yet he never achieved the coveted blockbuster status in America.

His new film, appropriately titled JCVD, is garnering real attention on the festival circuit. Van Damme plays a character not far distant from his real life persona. More than just a comedy, the movie promises to give us real depth of character.

Van Damme is getting real attention for his nuanced performance. This comes as a surprise to most film critics, given the fact that even in his hey day, he was hardly seen as an acting talent. But apparently, there were sides of JCVD that we were never allowed to see.

The movie seems to move from a hip mockumentary to a genuine action film, as Van Damme is forced to use his martial arts skills in a bank heist. The whole thing looks to be enormously fun. I can hardly wait to see it.

This unique "log cabin" was guilt in 1907 by a retired school teacher and Civil War veteran and in the final 31 years of his life created this unforgettable legacy in three parts. The "log cabin" was built with logs up to 27 feet long and cared from limestone. Dinsmoor, the builder, call it "the most unique home for living or dead on Earth." He gave tours of this 11 room home during his lifetime. Now tours are given daily May through October. Weekends in January & February. Weekdays March, April, November & December. The cost for the tours is just $6 for adults and $1 for age 6-12. The garden is built of limestone and 113 tons of concrete and tells the history of the world starting with its creation. Come and see the 150 figures plus other forms such as insects to 40 ft tall trees in this unique and fascinating garden in the small town of Lucas.

Manhattan and Junction City are the home of Fort Riley. Here you can experience the history of the past and see the current military strategies. You can tour the last cavalry training stables with its original cobblestone flooring which used to house 76 horses. Today it still houses horses for the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard where 20 head are ready for parade all the time. This facility was built in 1889. When you are through with this tour there are a number of others that will be just as interesting for you to see and enjoy.

Take the Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway to see the true color of Kansas. Here the hills are filled with canyons, rolling hills, mesas and buttes in stunning color, right in central Kansas. The red cedar tress add a beautiful touch to the terrain. The land is red because it is full of iron oxide which is actually rust. Get off the paved roads to see the real beauty but keep in mind that this is open range so keep your eyes open for animals.

How many towns do you know that have two water towers? Probably a lot of them, but have you ever seen a town that has a Hot and Cold water tower? Canton has these two which must bring a chuckle to residents when visitors ask if it's really true that one has hot and one has cold! It sure does show that those Kansas folks have a great sense of humor.

Everyone believes "their" markets are the "coolest" collectible toy markets, but most fingers point to vintage Hot Wheels, vintage Transformers, vintage Star Wars, and vintage Pez. Out of all of these, Star Wars vintage toys are arguably among the most valuable individually, though with the many Pez prototypes and variations available, Pez are probably more valuable in aggregate.

In the late seventies, Kenner produced the original line of twelve Star Wars toys, and this entire line is highly desirable to Star Wars enthusiasts, each netting more than two thousand dollars in great condition and in their original packaging. The most valuable vintage toy is argued to be Vlix, a short-lived character who was featured in a 1983 cartoon. Vlix runs well over $6,000 if in great condition.

Contributing to the valuation of these figures is the license exclusivity. For example, Kenner Canada, located in Toronto, Ontario, was the Canadian licensee for Star Wars toys in Canada from 1977 until 1985, but only manufactured about ten percent of the figures at that time. That, in addition to the fact that the Canadian releases were packaged with bilingual packaging, adds an interesting twist to those interested in the collectible value of these toys.

Another interesting collectible item available, but very hard to locate, are figure prototypes. Prototypes and test products are very common in other markets, e.g. the collectible Pez market, but much more rare in the Star Wars market.

While many current Star Wars fans are young, and because there has been a glut of new licenses on the market, these newer figures will likely never attain the valuations that current vintage figures attained. For example, a recent release features Star Wars toys that morph from characters like Darth Vader into objects like the Death Star. These Transformers figures mashups are selling right now, but supply is also high, removing one of the valuation factors from the equation.

There are also other foreign releases, with the Japanese Star Wars figures being very unique, and therefore, very desirable and very collectible. European toys are also popular and regularly confused with Canadian releases, due to their bilingual packaging. The easiest way to tell these releases apart is by viewing the address on the package, which will clearly indicate the country of origin.

With Star Wars toys, you have a rabid fan base, a killer movie franchise, and heavy demand for vintage figures. These factors combine to lead many professional collectors to believe that Star Wars vintage action figures will retain their valuations for the long haul.

So dig in your attic, uncover that old Landspeeder or AT-AT Walker, and see if you have a collectible on your hands!
